Not so long ago James George went about his business completely unbeknown to me. This is the way of the upcoming artist, one day a person hasn’t even heard of them, and the next they have gained a new and loyal fan. James is an artist from Manchester, who has not only written and sung his debut track ‘Make You Mine’ completely solo, but has also recorded, mixed and mastered it alone in a remarkably short space of time. Growing up in a musical family, it is unsurprising that he has ended up producing music of such a high quality when you take into account the fact that he has been playing since he was twelve. ‘Make You Mine’ has gained widespread radio airtime and has succeeded in expanding his fan base outside of his native Manchester, so just how good is it?
Sitting on a bus travelling through Manchester, the base idea formed in James’ head for his latest single; ‘Make You Mine’, and he has since endeavoured almost single-handedly to get it to be the finished product it is today. Miles Kane-esque guitars and vocals laid over early Killers synths, ‘Make You Mine’ hints that James George could be the next big English solo artist in the indie rock scene, following in the footsteps of the likes of Jake Bugg. Manchester has a rich musical history, but is possibly better known for spawning big bands rather than lone singers (who can forget the infamous ‘Madchester’ scene?), so it is refreshing to see something new appear from the area. With reports of new music on the way and a possible UK tour in the future, Make You Mine’ is just a marker, a hint at where James George is going next. And a promising hint at that.
